President Tinubu Redesignates University of Maiduguri to Honour Late Buhari

 President Bola Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University, a decision unveiled during an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Thursday, July 17, 2025, held to pay tribute to the late former Nigerian leader. 

The announcement, made in the presence of cabinet members, state governors, and National Assembly leaders, reflects Tinubu’s intent to immortalize Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at age 82 in a London hospital and was buried in Daura on July 15. Tinubu described the renaming as a fitting tribute to Buhari’s legacy of integrity and service, particularly his efforts to stabilize the northeast during his 2015-2023 presidency amid Boko Haram insurgency.

The move has sparked varied reactions, with some viewing it as a symbolic gesture recognizing Buhari’s infrastructure investments in the region, including a $1 billion reconstruction fund, while others question its timing and relevance, given ongoing educational challenges like ASUU strikes affecting 70% of federal universities. 

The university, established in 1975, serves over 30,000 students, and its new designation aims to anchor Buhari’s contributions, though critics argue it overlooks local identity. The FEC session included emotional tributes, with Tinubu praising Buhari’s humility and restraint, setting a tone for national reflection as the government plans further commemorative events.
