Political Tension Escalates in Ebonyi as Governor Nwifuru Suspends 81 Officials

 Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State on July 28, 2025, suspended 81 political appointees, including commissioners, special advisers, and local government chairmen, plunging the state into political tension. 

The decision, announced via a state broadcast, cited allegations of corruption, inefficiency, and insubordination, though specific charges were not detailed pending an investigation by a newly formed panel. The affected officials, representing 70% of the state’s executive council, include key figures like the Commissioner for Finance, Chukwuma Nwankwo, and 12 local government chairmen, signaling a significant overhaul of Nwifuru’s administration, which began in May 2023.

The move follows months of reported friction, with the suspended officials accused of mismanaging a ₦15 billion state allocation for infrastructure projects, according to a preliminary audit by the Ebonyi State Anti-Corruption Commission. Opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), condemned the suspensions as a political purge ahead of local elections, while Nwifuru’s All Progressives Congress (APC) defends it as a governance reset.
