The police command in Edo State has deployed 5,000 personnel, including explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams, to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration of this year’s Eid-el-Fitr.
The deployment, announced in a statement on Wednesday night, is part of broader security measures aimed at protecting lives and property during the festive period, which typically sees large public gatherings.
According to the command, officers will be stationed at major prayer grounds, highways, motor parks, and other public spaces expected to witness increased human and vehicular movement.
As part of the operation, EOD units have been strategically deployed across the state to conduct routine security sweeps and respond swiftly to any potential threats.
The commissioner of police, Monday Agbonika, has also directed sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations, particularly along entry and exit routes into the state.
The command noted that these measures are designed to prevent security breaches while maintaining a visible law enforcement presence throughout the celebration period.

While assuring residents of adequate security, the police encouraged members of the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities or objects.
“Residents are encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear, while remaining observant and reporting any unusual movements or objects to the police,” the statement said.

Authorities added that security personnel would maintain a strong presence before, during, and after the celebrations to ensure continuous safety.
The move reflects routine security reinforcements during major religious celebrations in Nigeria, when large crowds gather for prayers, travel, and social activities.
With Eid-el-Fitr marking the end of Ramadan, increased mobility across cities and states often prompts heightened coordination among security agencies to prevent disruptions and ensure a smooth celebration.
