Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his determination to run in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that no obstacles will prevent him from participating.

Speaking at the OBIDIENT Conference and his official declaration for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Obi made it clear that he is committed to contesting the polls regardless of alleged attempts to block his candidacy.

Obi recently joined the ADC after departing from the Labour Party (LP). He explained that his exit was informed by concerns over recognition of party leadership by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“I left LP when I got informed that as long as I remain in the party, INEC will not recognize its leadership, that the federal government doesn’t want me on the ballot,” he said. The move underscores Obi’s strategic decision to ensure he has a viable political platform for 2027.

Addressing supporters, Obi stressed that he will contest the election under any circumstances. “I want to assure you that I will contest the coming election even if it is held in their bedroom, and if they don’t want to transmit the results, we will transmit them for them,” he declared.

His remarks reflect his resolve to challenge any barriers to electoral participation and assert the importance of accountability in the democratic process.

Criticism of the Current Administration

Obi also used the occasion to critique the borrowing record of the Tinubu administration, highlighting the long-term fiscal implications. “The current administration has collected more loans than every other administration, and most of these loans will be repaid from 2045 to 2050 when most of the people who plunged the country into this indebtedness are no more,” he said. He emphasized that sustainable development requires investment in human capital, particularly in education and healthcare, which he said would be priorities under his leadership.

Obi added a personal note on integrity and accountability, recalling his tenure as governor: “When I became governor of Anambra, I advised my wife to forget about the Office of First Lady because we were not elected together. I approved over 100 Certificates of Occupancy on government land, but had none for myself or my family. If you find any, petition me to the appropriate authority.”

Mobilization and Generational Change

Tanko Yunusa, coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement worldwide, urged supporters to begin mobilisation ahead of 2027 and to rally behind the ADC. Ben Smith, the Akwa Ibom state coordinator of the movement, framed the upcoming election as a chance for generational change: “The 2027 presidential election is not about an individual but about a generation, jobs for the youths, security for families, dignity for workers, and hope for every Nigerian.”

The event highlighted both Obi’s determination to contest the presidency and the OBIDIENT Movement’s commitment to building grassroots support, signalling an early and strategic start to the 2027 electoral campaign.
