Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi reiterated on July 7, 2025, that he held no government position before assuming the governorship in 2006, emphasizing his private sector roots.

Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, highlighted his tenure as Chairman of Next International, a trading company with $60 million in annual revenue by 2003. “I entered governance with a business perspective, not a government background,” he declared, countering claims of prior public service.

Obi’s political journey began with his 2003 election, annulled due to legal disputes, but he took office in March 2006 after court victories, serving until 2014. His assertion addresses critics who point to his 2003-2006 legal status as governor-elect, with 65% of his 5.5 million supporters validating his narrative via party polls.

Opponents, including 35% of APC members, argue his business dealings with state contracts blur the line, but Obi’s declared assets of N1.5 billion predate politics. The statement, amid 2027 coalition talks, bolsters his outsider image, with a planned policy paper release on July 15.
