Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party of Nigeria, Peter Obi, has formally received his membership card of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party begins a mobilisation drive ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi collected the membership card at Agulu Ward 2 during the launch of the ADC membership mobilisation, registration, and revalidation exercise in Awka, Anambra State.
At the event, he emphasised that political leaders from the South-East were working together and engaging with other regions to build broader political cooperation across the country.
According to him, the goal of the mobilisation exercise is to expand the party’s base and encourage collaboration among opposition groups seeking political reforms in Nigeria.

Obi said the initiative would attract members from different political parties and strengthen efforts to build a coalition focused on improving governance and national development.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing insecurity and economic hardship, noting that Nigeria should work towards becoming a country where citizens feel safe and have opportunities to thrive.
The former governor of Anambra State also raised concerns about the amended 2026 Electoral Act, particularly provisions he believes give excessive influence to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over how political parties choose their candidates.
He argued that the electoral body should concentrate on organising credible elections rather than intervening in internal party decisions.
Obi further criticised the current state of governance in Nigeria, saying political leaders were more focused on retaining power than addressing pressing national challenges.

He expressed concern over persistent problems such as insecurity and electricity shortages, stressing that leadership should prioritise policies that improve citizens’ welfare.
The former presidential candidate said the ADC plans to register a large number of new members nationwide in preparation for the next election cycle.
According to him, the 2027 election would centre on confronting poor leadership and promoting policies aimed at reducing poverty and improving national security.
