Peter Obi urges Nigerians to take Kemi Badenoch’s remarks as a call to action for improving citizens’ living conditions.
Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to reflect on Kemi Badenoch’s recent comments about the country, viewing them as motivation for much-needed reforms.
Reacting to the remarks made by Badenoch, a Nigerian-born member of the UK’s Conservative Party, who stated that she wouldn’t want Britain to become like Nigeria—where failed governance and selfish politicians have worsened living conditions—Obi emphasized the need for constructive change over blind patriotism.

In a post on X, he questioned:
“What should we make of all the negative remarks about Nigeria?”
He pointed out that similar concerns had been raised in the past, including a Nigerian newspaper’s criticism of a U.S. travel advisory warning Americans about visiting Nigeria. The advisory flagged major issues such as poor infrastructure and insecurity—two areas in which Nigeria has consistently struggled.
Obi also cited concerns about the nation’s healthcare system, noting that while Nigeria has skilled medical professionals, the availability of quality healthcare facilities remains inadequate.
“Essential medications, including those for diabetes and hypertension, are often unavailable, and there is a high risk of purchasing counterfeit drugs.”
He lamented that despite repeated criticisms and warnings, little has changed, urging the country’s leaders to take decisive action in addressing these longstanding issues.
