The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured a £504 million donation from the United Kingdom to support afforestation projects aimed at combating desertification and promoting environmental sustainability.

The funds are earmarked for large-scale tree planting campaigns, restoration of degraded lands, and the development of sustainable agricultural practices.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s environmental conservation efforts. He noted that the initiative aligns with global climate change mitigation strategies and underscores the importance of preserving biodiversity.

Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, welcomed the donation, stating that it would significantly boost the country’s afforestation programs. He highlighted that the initiative would not only address environmental concerns but also create employment opportunities in rural communities through the establishment of tree nurseries and related activities.
