Iyabo Ojo has scored a major box office win as her latest film, The Return of Arinzo, pulled in N104.8 million during its opening weekend, emerging as the highest-grossing title over the Easter holiday period in Nigerian cinemas.

The film, released between April 3 and April 5, 2026, also set a new record for Nollywood sequels, delivering the biggest opening weekend ever recorded for a follow-up title. Beyond that, it now ranks as the second-highest opening weekend performance of the year so far, underscoring its strong reception among cinema-goers.

Figures released by FilmOne Entertainment, the movie’s distributor, highlight not just the commercial success but also the cultural resonance of the film. In a statement shared on social media, the distributor described the performance as more than just numbers, pointing instead to audience connection and turnout across the region.

The strong debut reinforces the growing importance of holiday windows like Easter, which have increasingly become prime release periods for Nollywood blockbusters aiming to maximise cinema attendance.

A sequel that outperformed expectations

What makes The Return of Arinzo particularly notable is its performance as a sequel, traditionally a more challenging category in Nollywood. By surpassing previous records, the film signals a shift in audience appetite, where well-developed franchises and returning storylines are beginning to command stronger loyalty.

Produced under Fespris Production and directed by Ojo herself, the film blends drama, politics, and suspense. It follows a rising actor who returns home with his fiancée to support his father’s presidential ambition, only for her arrival to reopen a buried scandal linked to a powerful political figure.

As the story unfolds, layers of betrayal and hidden identities come to light, culminating in revelations surrounding Arinzo’s death. The film’s narrative depth, combined with its political undertones, appears to have contributed to its broad appeal among viewers.

Its ensemble cast, featuring names like Mercy Aigbe, Funke Akindele, Bimbo Akintola, and Uzor Arukwe, also added to its pull, drawing audiences from across different fan bases.

Nollywood’s box office momentum continues

The film’s performance comes at a time when Nigeria’s cinema industry is showing signs of sustained recovery and growth. Strong openings like this are increasingly seen as indicators of a healthier box office ecosystem, driven by improved distribution strategies and rising consumer interest in local content.

For Ojo, the success further cements her position not just as an actress but as a commercially viable filmmaker. It builds on her previous project, Labake Olododo: The Warrior Lord, which grossed over N200 million in 2025 and demonstrated her ability to deliver high-performing titles.

Industry observers say the momentum behind The Return of Arinzo reflects a broader evolution within Nollywood, where storytelling, marketing, and timing are aligning more effectively to produce blockbuster results.

As cinema audiences continue to return in larger numbers, especially during peak seasons, films like this are setting new benchmarks and reshaping expectations for what Nigerian productions can achieve at the box office.
