The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that the dates announced for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections were determined in strict compliance with constitutional provisions and electoral regulations, amid growing public concerns over the timing.
In a statement issued on February 13, INEC said the timetable was developed in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and its own regulations governing the conduct of elections. The Commission emphasised that these legal frameworks clearly specify when national and state elections must be held.

According to INEC, its guidelines provide that presidential and National Assembly elections must take place on the third Saturday of February in an election year, while governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled two weeks later.
Based on this provision, the Commission fixed February 20, 2027, for presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly polls.
Despite the legal basis for the announced dates, INEC said it has received feedback from stakeholders regarding potential clashes with national observances and holidays that could affect voter participation.

The Commission said it is reviewing these concerns and has begun consultations to determine whether adjustments may be necessary. It noted that any potential changes would require careful consideration and, where applicable, legislative intervention to ensure compliance with existing constitutional and statutory requirements.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and credible elections, assuring Nigerians that any further decisions regarding the timetable would be communicated promptly. The Commission added that its priority remains ensuring inclusive participation and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
