The federal government has announced plans to begin repair work on damaged expansion joints on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway starting March 10.

The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Olayiwola Komolafe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday.

He explained that the maintenance exercise would take place on the outbound Lagos section of the bridge between Chainage 5+350 and 6+115.

According to him, the repair work was approved by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, and is expected to last for two weeks, ending on March 24.

Komolafe said the operation would involve replacing damaged expansion joints on the bridge in order to improve safety and extend the lifespan of the structure.

He noted that part of the bridge would be temporarily closed during the repair period, resulting in a reduced road width for vehicles travelling out of Lagos.

Alternative routes announced for motorists

The ministry advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time and make use of alternative routes to reduce traffic congestion around the work zone.

Drivers travelling from Ikorodu to Mowe, Sagamu, and Ibadan were encouraged to pass through Shimawa or Mosinmi.

Motorists coming from Lagos Island were also advised to consider the Epe corridor through Ijebu Ode to connect with Sagamu, Ibadan, and Mowe.

However, Komolafe cautioned that a shorter route may not necessarily translate to faster travel during the repair period due to possible traffic build-up.

He therefore urged road users to follow traffic management directives and drive carefully around the construction zone.

The controller also appealed to motorists for patience and understanding over the inconvenience that the temporary partial closure of the bridge may cause.
