Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai was brought before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday morning under tight security as he faced arraignment over alleged corruption-related offences, with access to the courtroom restricted and journalists barred from covering proceedings inside.
El-Rufai arrived at the court premises at about 9:00 a.m. in a Hilux vehicle and remained inside for over 30 minutes before being escorted into the courtroom around 9:34 a.m. Dressed in a light green babanriga and matching cap, he was surrounded by a heavy security presence as operatives formed a protective cordon while leading him into the court.
Security deployment was extensive, with personnel drawn from multiple agencies, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, the Mobile Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The courtroom itself was placed under strict control, with operatives denying journalists entry despite their early arrival at the venue.

The heavy security presence extended beyond the courtroom to the surrounding area, where vehicular movement was restricted. Motorists were forced into a single lane from the Ungwan Sarki axis through Kawo, resulting in traffic disruptions around the court complex, located within the old Nigerian Defence Academy premises.

The restriction of press access underscored the sensitivity of the case, which has drawn national attention following weeks of legal and political developments.
The security arrangements also reflected concerns over possible unrest or disruptions during the proceedings.
According to the anti-corruption agency, El-Rufai is being arraigned alongside one Joel Adoga in a case marked FHC/KD/73/2026 before the Federal High Court. The charges include alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.
In addition to the federal case, the commission disclosed that a separate charge has been filed against the former governor and another defendant, Amadu Sule, before a Kaduna State High Court. The charges in the state case include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
The commission stated that both cases were filed on March 18, 2026, and that El-Rufai had been duly served in accordance with legal procedures. It added that the date for his arraignment at the state high court would be communicated in due course.

The court appearance follows mounting pressure from stakeholders who had criticised his continued detention without formal arraignment. Political actors, including members of opposition groups, as well as civil society organisations, had called for either his release or immediate prosecution.
El-Rufai was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16, 2026, before being granted bail two days later. He was subsequently re-arrested by the ICPC and has remained in custody pending his arraignment.
The outcome of the proceedings is expected to shape the next phase of what is likely to be a closely watched legal battle with significant political implications.
