Deputy Speaker Kalu Urges Igbos to Support Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid

 Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has called on the Igbo community to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, citing the president’s achievements in economic, social, and political reforms over the past two years. 

Kalu made the appeal during courtesy visits by the Tinubu Mandate Support Group (TMSG), Abia State Chapter, led by Hon. Armstrong Okoronkwo, and the Club 17 Initiative, led by Prince George Nnanna, at his residence in Umuahia, Abia State, on April 26, 2025. The deputy speaker described Tinubu as a “progressive Nigerian” committed to leaving a lasting legacy through bold policies that have given the Igbo greater relevance in national politics.

Kalu emphasized that Tinubu’s administration has implemented unprecedented reforms, including efforts to stabilize the naira, clear foreign exchange backlogs, and improve infrastructure, which he believes warrant a second term. “We should invest our votes where there is progress, and that’s with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

 It’s on his mandate that we, as Ndi Igbo, are going to stand,” Kalu stated, urging Igbos to partner with their southwestern counterparts to support the president. He also expressed optimism about the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning the 2027 gubernatorial election in Abia State, currently governed by the Labour Party, and commended the groups for their voter mobilization efforts.

The TMSG chairman, Okoronkwo, praised Kalu’s legislative contributions and assured him of the group’s commitment to ensuring Tinubu’s re-election, while Nnanna reported progress on Kalu’s Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), including the nomination of peace marshals across Abia’s wards. The appeal has sparked mixed reactions, with some Igbos welcoming Kalu’s call as a pragmatic move to secure federal benefits, while others, particularly supporters of opposition parties, view it as premature given ongoing economic challenges like 33.9% inflation and fuel price hikes. Kalu’s remarks underscore the intensifying political maneuvering ahead of 2027, with the APC seeking to strengthen its foothold in the Southeast, a region where Tinubu polled less than 10% of votes in 2023.
