An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court has remanded a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, in prison over allegations of conspiracy, attempted abortion, and the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Ogun State.
The remand order was issued on Thursday by Magistrate O.O. Sam-Obaleye following an ex parte application by the prosecution. The case involves the death of 23-year-old corps member, Victoria Ariyo, who was reportedly administered drugs in an attempt to terminate a pregnancy.
According to the police, the incident occurred between January and March in the Ikereku area of Abeokuta. The prosecution alleges that the nurse supplied substances intended to induce abortion, which ultimately led to the corps member’s death.
The court’s decision to remand the defendant marks the beginning of formal legal proceedings, pending further review by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
During the hearing, police counsel, Solomon Babalola, urged the court to remand the defendant for an initial period of 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre.
He argued that the remand was necessary to allow time for the DPP to issue legal advice on the case, given the severity of the charges, which include conspiracy, unlawful abortion, and murder under Ogun State law.

The prosecution also told the court that the defendant allegedly acted in collaboration with other individuals who are currently at large.
The case extends beyond the nurse, with one Olalekan Abass, identified as an official of the National Youth Service Corps, also implicated.
According to the prosecution, he allegedly impregnated the deceased and provided drugs intended to terminate the pregnancy, raising further questions about the circumstances leading to the incident.
The involvement of multiple suspects adds complexity to the case, as investigations continue.
In granting the application, the magistrate ordered that the defendant be held in custody pending the DPP’s advice and adjourned the case to May 26 for mention.
The adjournment allows time for prosecutors to review evidence and determine the next legal steps.
As the case progresses, attention will focus on the outcome of the DPP’s review and whether additional charges or arrests may follow in connection with the death of the corps member.
