Several explosions occurred in Maiduguri on Monday evening, leaving multiple residents injured and causing widespread fear across the city. The attacks, reportedly carried out by Boko Haram suicide bombers, targeted public spaces amid the holy month of Ramadan, compounding tensions in a region already grappling with insurgency-related violence.
Governor Babagana Zulum, currently performing the lesser hajj in Saudi Arabia, expressed profound sadness over the incident and condemned the bombings as cruel and cowardly. In a statement issued by his spokesman, Dauda Iliya, the governor called on residents to remain vigilant and urged heightened security measures, particularly in crowded areas such as places of worship and marketplaces.
“I am deeply saddened by the explosions that occurred in parts of the metropolis on Monday evening. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and those injured as a result of the blast. The act is utterly condemnable, barbaric, and inhumane,” the statement read.

Authorities have confirmed that emergency services responded promptly to the blasts, with medical teams attending to the injured and security forces securing affected areas. While exact casualty figures are still being compiled, initial reports suggest several civilians sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Governor Zulum noted that the surge in attacks may be linked to intensified military operations against Boko Haram in Sambisa Forest and other known insurgent hideouts. He reassured residents that the Nigerian military and other security agencies are actively monitoring the situation and have implemented measures to prevent further attacks in Maiduguri and across Borno State.
The governor urged the public to continue their lawful activities without panic, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in countering insurgent threats. Residents were advised to report any suspicious movements or activity to security personnel promptly.
Security analysts highlight that Boko Haram has historically targeted religious and civilian gatherings to destabilize local governance and instill fear, especially during significant periods like Ramadan. The latest bombings underscore the persistent threat the insurgent group poses despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.
Local authorities, in coordination with federal security agencies, are reviewing intelligence and surveillance data to assess how the attacks were executed and to bolster protective measures for vulnerable areas. The Nigerian police and military have heightened patrols in strategic locations, while awareness campaigns have been reinforced to ensure residents remain alert and cooperative with security directives.

Community leaders and humanitarian organizations are also mobilizing to provide immediate support to affected families, including medical care, counseling, and emergency relief. The government has reiterated its commitment to restoring normalcy in Maiduguri and ensuring that such barbaric acts do not disrupt the lives of law-abiding citizens.
While Borno State continues to face security challenges, Governor Zulum emphasized resilience and unity, encouraging citizens to remain steadfast and trust in the protective measures of security agencies. The administration maintains that any attempt by insurgents to undermine peace will be met with coordinated counteractions.
Authorities are expected to release a full report on the attacks, including casualty figures and security assessments, in the coming days, as investigations into the incidents remain ongoing.
