The Academic Staff Union of Universities, on August 20, 2025, threatened a fresh nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of undermining trust by failing to honor the 2009 agreement.

Speaking in Abuja, ASUU’s leadership described the government’s inaction on funding, staff welfare, and university autonomy as a betrayal of commitments made over a decade ago. The union demanded immediate action to avert disruptions in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The 2009 agreement, aimed at revitalizing public universities, includes provisions for improved infrastructure and academic allowances. ASUU argued that delays in implementation have deepened the education sector’s challenges, leaving lecturers and students frustrated. The union’s warning follows stalled negotiations, with the government citing competing national priorities. ASUU, however, insists that education remains critical to Nigeria’s development, urging swift resolution to prevent academic shutdowns.

The threat has sparked concern among students and parents, who fear another disruption to academic calendars. Some call for dialogue to resolve the impasse, while others support ASUU’s push for accountability. The standoff, echoing past strikes, tests the government’s commitment to education reform. As tensions rise, ASUU’s demands highlight the urgent need to address systemic issues in Nigeria’s universities, shaping the future of higher education in the nation.
