As political activities intensify ahead of the 2025 Anambra State governorship election, the Labour Party (LP) has assured all aspirants of a level playing field in the party’s primary election. The assurance comes amid growing interest from various political figures seeking to contest under the party’s banner.

Speaking in Awka, the state capital, LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, reiterated the party’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent primaries. He emphasized that no aspirant would be unfairly favored or sidelined, as the party aims to field the best candidate who can secure victory in the general election.

“We are committed to upholding the values of democracy, and that starts with ensuring a credible primary process. Every aspirant will have an equal opportunity, and the outcome will be based on merit and the choice of our members,” Abure stated.

Since the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party has gained significant traction in Anambra, particularly following Peter Obi’s strong showing in the presidential election. Obi, a former governor of the state and LP’s presidential candidate in 2023, remains a key figure influencing political dynamics in Anambra. His association with the party has attracted many aspirants who believe the LP now stands a strong chance of winning the governorship seat.

Several political observers believe that if LP manages to hold credible primaries and present a popular candidate, it could emerge as a formidable force against the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and other opposition parties in the state.

So far, at least five aspirants have publicly declared their intention to contest under the LP platform, with more expected to join in the coming weeks. While the party has not officially disclosed its primary election date, internal consultations and strategic meetings are already in full swing.

A party chieftain, who spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that while the LP is growing in strength, internal disputes must be avoided to ensure unity ahead of the election. “We have seen cases where internal divisions cost political parties victory. The leadership is working hard to prevent such issues and to maintain party cohesion,” he noted.

With the governorship race heating up, political analysts predict that the Anambra 2025 election will be highly competitive. The LP’s ability to manage its primary election process effectively will be a crucial determinant of its success in the polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to officially release the full timetable for the election, but parties are already mobilizing support and preparing their campaign strategies.

For now, all eyes are on the Labour Party as it works to demonstrate that it can provide a credible alternative to the people of Anambra State.
