Alaafin Vows to Reclaim Oyo Artefacts Stolen in 1895

 Oba Akeem Owoade, the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, has committed to the repatriation of cultural artefacts taken during the British expedition of 1895. 

These artefacts, which hold immense historical and cultural significance, are currently housed in various international museums and private collections.

Oba Owoade’s initiative aligns with broader efforts across Nigeria to recover looted cultural properties. The National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) has been actively negotiating the return of such items, emphasizing the restoration of national pride and the rectification of historical injustices.

The Alaafin’s dedication to this cause is anticipated to bolster these efforts, fostering a renaissance in Yoruba art, history, and culture. Collaborations between traditional institutions and governmental agencies are expected to enhance the preservation and celebration of Nigeria’s rich heritage.
