The Lagos State House of Assembly is currently embroiled in a significant internal conflict following a contentious ₦5 billion expenditure authorized during a brief change in its leadership.

On January 13, 2025, Mojisola Meranda assumed the role of acting Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the impeachment of the then-Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. During her tenure, Ms. Meranda approved the disbursement of ₦5 billion for the procurement of 40 units of the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs, intended for the use of the assembly members. This decision was executed promptly after her assumption of office.

However, Ms. Meranda’s tenure as acting Speaker was short-lived. On March 3, 2025, Mr. Obasa was reinstated as Speaker, reportedly following directives from President Bola Tinubu. Upon his return, Speaker Obasa expressed strong objections to the vehicle procurement authorized by Ms. Meranda. He has since demanded the immediate return of the ₦5 billion, asserting that the expenditure was unauthorized and executed without proper consultation.

The demand for the return of the funds has led to heightened tensions within the assembly. Many lawmakers, who have already taken possession of the new vehicles, are resisting the call to return them. They argue that the vehicles were acquired for official use and that the procurement process adhered to the necessary protocols during Ms. Meranda’s tenure. This standoff has resulted in a palpable divide among assembly members, with factions forming in support of either Speaker Obasa or Ms. Meranda.

This internal dispute has significant implications for the legislative functions of the Lagos State House of Assembly. The discord threatens to impede legislative processes and could undermine public confidence in the assembly’s ability to govern effectively. Moreover, the controversy over such a substantial expenditure raises critical questions about fiscal responsibility and transparency within the state’s legislative framework.

As the situation unfolds, it is imperative for the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly to address the conflict through dialogue and adherence to due process. Ensuring transparency and accountability in financial matters is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the legislative body and upholding public trust.
