Liverpool’s defensive concerns may be deepening after new signing Jeremy Jacquet suffered what his club described as a “serious” shoulder injury while playing for Rennes on Saturday.
The 20-year-old centre-back went down awkwardly in the second half of Rennes’ 3–1 Ligue 1 defeat at RC Lens and had to be helped off the pitch, clearly in pain. Speaking after the match, Rennes head coach Habib Beye confirmed that the injury was significant, raising immediate uncertainty around Jacquet’s short-term future.
“For Jeremy, it’s his shoulder,” Beye said. “We’ll need more time to assess, but it’s definitely quite serious.”

Jacquet only completed a £60 million move to Liverpool earlier this week, although the deal keeps him at Rennes until the end of the season. The injury now casts doubt over how much football he will be able to play before reporting to Anfield in the summer, and whether Liverpool will receive him fully fit.

The setback comes at a difficult moment for Liverpool, who are already stretched at the back. Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Conor Bradley are all currently sidelined, leaving manager Arne Slot with limited defensive options ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.

For Rennes, the blow was compounded by another injury in the same match, with defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal also forced off with a muscular problem, further weakening a side already struggling for form.
Liverpool will now wait on medical updates from France, hoping their latest investment avoids a prolonged spell on the sidelines before his Premier League chapter even begins.
