The Abia State Government has reached an advanced stage of discussions with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to construct a new train station in Umuahia, aimed at modernising transport infrastructure and boosting economic activity in the state.
The information commissioner, Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting. He said the proposed station would be located next to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and designed as part of an integrated urban transport system.
According to Kanu, the project will include a rail corridor complemented by commercial and retail spaces, positioning the area as a new economic hub. Plans also include constructing multiple access roads to improve connectivity between the station and surrounding communities.

Beyond the rail project, the state is pushing a broader urban transport overhaul. Kanu revealed that the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal has been completed and is ready for commissioning, alongside supporting infrastructure for the city’s green bus transport scheme.
These include charging stations, ticketing points, bus shelters and junction improvement works across the city, part of efforts to transition towards a more organised and sustainable public transport system.
The government is also restructuring commercial activity in the city. Through the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, traders are being relocated from the busy Isi-Gate area to the newly developed Relief Market in Afara.
Kanu said compensation has been fully paid to affected landowners, while perimeter fencing of the new market site is ongoing, signalling the final phase of the relocation process.

In addition, the state has concluded arrangements with the Federal Ministry of Housing for the groundbreaking of a Federal Housing Authority estate along the Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road.
The project is expected to expand access to affordable housing while supporting sustainable urban growth.
Kanu added that several infrastructure projects completed by the Greater Aba Development Authority, including roads and a new daily market, are also set for inauguration, as the state ramps up efforts to drive economic transformation under the administration of Alex Otti.
